The Importance of Baptism in the Life of the Church

Last Sunday, my wife and I were blessed to be Godparents to the third son of our good friends who live in California. Welcoming baby Ambrose into the Catholic Church, along with our friend’s families was a great honor. My wife and I are also Godparents to my sister and brother-in-law’s third child. Along with these children, we are also Godparents to 3 other nieces and nephews, all baptized before we met.

Each time I am asked is a great blessing and it reminds me how important the Sacrament of Baptism is in the life of a Christian. One of the primary reasons why Baptism is so important is that it’s the gateway to all the other Sacraments. It also has a relational element to it since we begin to build our relationships with God the Father, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, Our Lady, and the Church.

As we were leaving the Baptism last week with our friends and their children, we were talking about the importance of lighting the Baptism candle each year on the day of our Baptism. We put candles on birthday cakes when we celebrate the day we were born – shouldn’t we light our Baptism candle on the day we were born into new life through Jesus Christ?  In one of my previous articles below, I talk about the Renewal of Baptism Promises, which is something we can also do on this day.

So, with today being the Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ, I wanted to quickly share some previous articles I have written that focus on Baptism. Hope you enjoy them!
