The Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth sits on top of what is believed to be the house of the Virgin Mary when she resided there. It was at this residence that the Angel Gabriel visited her and told her that she would carry Jesus in our womb. The cave where this happened in on the lower level of the church. It is known as Mary’s cave.
The first church built on this site was done in 427 A.D, although a few others have been built and then destroyed since then. The current church, built-in 1969, stands currently on the location, and there are remains of the old churches within this church. Many have said it is one of the most magnificent churches in the entire Middle East. It stands at 195 feet tall. Inside the church are beautifully created mosaics that were created by Christians from around the globe reflecting their country of origin.
It is considered the National Marian Shrine for Israel. To learn more about the history of the Basilica, I would encourage you to visit this site here.
